Five things to do in NYC during the Memorial Day weekend

Looking to beat the crowds in New York City? Try visiting the Big Apple during Memorial Day weekend, when many New Yorkers embark on their own vacations, making this the perfect time to celebrate New York’s unofficial start to summer and to remember America’s fallen soldiers.

Here are five Memorial Day activities for your New York itinerary:

Throughout the Memorial Day weekend Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

Throughout the weekend, visitors can peruse the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, dedicated to military and maritime history with a collection of museum ships in New York City. A weekend lineup of events will honor America’s heroes, view historic footage and explore interactive exhibits.

Central Park walking tour

During a stay at The Sherry-Netherland, take a stroll (or a guided walking tour) through Central Park, where a number of fountains, monuments, and sculptures honor past lives. The Sherry-Netherland is located directly across from Grand Army Plaza. Completed in 1916, the Plaza takes its name from the Union Army in the Civil War. A bronze statue Union General William Tecumseh Sherman stands at the entrance.

Fleet Week

Fleet Week New York marks a weeklong celebration where active military ships deployed in oversea operations dock in a variety of major cities for a week of celebration. Crews from the United States Navy, United States Marine Corps and United States Coast Guard enjoy New York attractions, while the public can take guided tours of the ships in Manhattan and in Staten Island. During the Memorial Day weekend, the fleets hold a number of planned events to remember America’s heroes.

New York Philharmonic Memorial Day Concert

Enjoy the New York Philharmonic’s heavenly music during the orchestra’s annual (and free) Memorial Day Concert, a New York tradition since 1992. Seating is first-come, first-serve with ticket distribution starting around 6 p.m.

One of the Nation’s Oldest Memorial Day Parade

At the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade, roughly half an hour away from The Sherry-Netherland, New Yorkers line up along the route to celebrate one of the nation’s oldest Memorial Day parades, a tradition that started in 1867, just two years after the end of the Civil War. Featuring bands and floats, along with a 21-gun salute in John Paul Jones Park, this parade kicks off at 11 a.m. on 87th Street and Third Avenue. The route travels to Marine Avenue, then up to Fourth Avenue, finishing at the park.
